3 Keys to Gain Influence for Every Leader, Executive, and Entrepreneur

noun:  the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others.

Do you ever find yourself wondering how you can increase your influence to get noticed— how you can inspire people to action?

Luckily, there are several keys to help gain and maintain your influence as a leader. By improving your ability to utilize your influence, you will produce better results in both your business life and beyond. 

Often the leaders, executives, or entrepreneurs that I coach initially use one default strategy in regards to exercising their influence. They apply a single approach in every circumstance. Sometimes this strategy works coincidentally, the same way a broken clock is right twice every day.

However, by developing greater flexibility and range, and by learning to increase your influence without relying on authority, you can be even more effective as an influential leader.

The 3 Keys

1. Chutzpah

Chutzpah is about determination, courage, shared values, and encounters. With our chutzpah, we seek to use our energy to find common ground and the ties that bond us all together. Use this perspective to form a team and create a feeling of alliance. 

The chutzpah is a mobilizing spirit and leverages how people are drawn toward strength and sense of purpose. Chutzpah influences people to persevere and succeed ultimately creating more fulfilling and satisfying work relationships. 

By implementing this strategy of communication and understanding within your business or company, you can improve your influential potential as a tuned-in leader.

2. Vision

Vision is about where we are headed.

Using vision as a powerful tool for planning, the leader paints a strong, inspiring image about where we can go together, and then invites others to contribute and enhance the vision. Visions help people see a compelling picture of what they are pursuing and sets an inspiring direction to advance towards.

This visionary approach is useful for newly formed teams, or when a push is needed to get groups to move forward despite obstacles. When visions are strong and clear, obstacles seem small and are able to be overcome. 

3. Walking Away

Wisdom can help an influential leader determine when to walk away when dialogues head in the wrong direction— when, for instance, an employee, co-worker, or client gets defensive or emotional during a conversation. When this happens, it is time to press reset.  

When you can sense that your communicative strategies aren’t working, take a break and regroup.

By excusing yourself and temporarily walking away, you are giving your teammates or clients an opportunity to reconsider their point of view and reconvene. Using a pause prevents a conversation from going south or from further escalating an issue.

The Harvard Negotiation Project calls this "Going to the Balcony." While today we are focused on increasing your influence in a business setting, The New York Times cites The Harvard Negotiation Project for exercising how these strategies can yield increased peace at home as well.
