5 Reminders for Leaders Leading Change Initiatives

 Even thinking about whether to change or not can give us cause for pause. 

Several of my recent executive coaching projects revolved around change initiatives. Clients were working on themes such as devising and implementing strategies for increasing productivity; improving a leader team’s business development abilities; improving teamwork during a new technology implementation project, and transforming a culture — to name a few.

Regardless of whether you are a senior leader in the corporate world, an entrepreneur building a team, in an organizational setting, in government, a non-profit or for-profit, there is a strong need for agility and for honing your ability to lead and live with change.

In each scenario, the thought of leaving the known to pursue the unknown evokes a gamut of responses. You will hear 50 reasons why not to change and you can probably add a few more reasons of your own to this picture. 

Here are five reminders to help you lead your team through change effectively: 

1.  Take an airplane view. When we are in the midst of developing strategy and implementing change, we need to fly above the day-to-day work to get an objective perspective. Imagine you are in an airplane and flying over your organization. What is working well? Where are the bottlenecks? Who is helping? Who is resisting?

2. Over-communicate your case for change. Share your vision and engage in 2-way discussions about how to get there.  Repeat the possibilities, promises, and reasons for pursuit by multiple means. Use large meetings, town halls, leadership team meetings, and use written, verbal and signage approaches. By over-communicating your message, you are giving your team multiple ways and means to align with you. Repeat the business case for change until it becomes part of your organization’s repertoire.

 3. Find new stars. When you are implementing transformational changes among your team and organization, expect to deal with resistance, conflict, and ambiguity. Be on the lookout for new leaders to emerge. Engage them to help you build quick wins and momentum. Who is handling the inevitable conflict and using it to bring more perspectives forward? 

4. Leaders go first. With each change, there are new actions and behaviors that need to happen. Leaders need to step out first and show the way. What can you do to symbolically show your team that you are willing to go first? Lead by your example.

 5. Communicate progress. Understand that change is usually hard, especially at first. Your team will be more inspired to move forward when you keep them informed about how they are doing. Build in time to celebrate the wins, process the hiccups, and handle the disappointments. 

When you remember these 5 keys in times of change, your team will thrive. Change is one aspect of work that is not likely to change anytime soon. So embrace it, conquer it and take your team to new heights.
